Town History

1900

The city mayor is C. A. Huston, city clerk is A. J. Amos, and the Great Northern railway is the transportation line for the city.

1904

Incorporated on July 1st of this year. Cashmere was the new name for the town of Mission. Judge James H. Chase, having traveled to India, thought the area reminded him of the mountainous Vale of Kashmir in northwest India and suggested the citizens of Mission to rename the town to Cashmere.

1909

Telephones lines come to town.

1913

First paved sidewalks in Cashmere.

1914

Cashmere gets electric lights.

1918

Armen Tertsagian and Mark Balaban searching for new ways to make use of surplus fruit from their Liberty Orchards formed Northwest Evaporating.

1919

First paved streets in Cashmere.

1932

Brothers Hy W. Rieke and H.H. Rieke establish Cashmere Valley Bank on September 24 Two previous banks in the area had failed at the beginning of the Great Depression leaving the area without a financial institution.

1936

The Cashmere Rotary Club is established.

1974

Grapelets, a new product of Liberty Orchards, became the "official candy of Expo 74".

1987

Cashmere is awarded the designation of Tree City USA.
