The “Escape to Safety” Interpretive Field Station at Wenatchee Confluence State Park

The interpretive sign reads,

Escape to Safety

Shallow waters and narrow river channels provide hiding and feeding places for small fish, especially young chinook salmon, as they migrate to the ocean. Larger fish are less likely to fall prey to one of their numerous natural enemies than small fish, so salmon that grow fast have an advantage in the struggle to survive.

To benefit the salmon, Chelan County Public Utility District No. 1 dug channels from the Wenatchee River to the shallow waters below you. Many fish migrating down the Wenatchee River are carried directly into the deep waters of the Columbia, where they are exposed to predators, such as squawfish. These channels allow many salmon to reach shallow protected waters where they can feed and grow before coninuing their jouney to the Pacific Ocean.
