After spending most of my day in Leavenworth I gradually worked my way up to the Chiwaukum area to find and photograph the Chiwaukum Cemetery. After turning off of Highway 2 into the gravel pit area I took a few wrong turns. Instead of heading back and getting my bearings I decided to do a little on foot exploring and take a few pictures of the forest and mountains.
I would get out of my vehicle and walk around a little and then get back in and drive a little deeper into the woods. At one point I noticed the most foul oder, luckily I was in my vehicle at the time. I slowly kept driving down the trail and the oder became considerably stronger and stronger. Just before reaching the dead-end dirt road, I could see where the oder was coming from. Two deer where ripped apart at the end of the road. It must have been quite recent as I noticed some of the blood was still not dry.
I naturally assumed that it was the work of poachers because of the way the deer were laying with them both practically piled on top of each other. The smell was terrible and I decided that whether or not it was the work of poachers or an animal I wasn't going to stick around and find out.
Well turning to back out of the thin dirt road I noticed a tree out of the passenger side window. It was about eight feet from my vehicle. About seven feet up the bark on this tree had been torn to shreds. Not only was the bark torn from the tree but much of the wood underneath. It was getting late and seeing that tree made me a little spooked so I decided to come back another day to photograph the cemetery.
I did some more research on the Internet about the Chiwaukum area to see if I could find some better directions to the cemetery. While I wasn't actually looking for information on bigfoot I came across a website where a guy and his girlfriend went on a hike up Chiwaukum Creek and he had an amazing story with photos of some of the strange things they saw and experienced during their trip.
I did finally return to Chiwaukum and photograph the cemetery and have an incredible urge to hike the trail up to Timothy Meadows. I have read many great stories about hiking up in that area and most have no mention of bigfeet.
Here is the article about the possible bigfoot experience, The Chiwaukum Enigma.
