Douglas County History

Map showing Douglas Counties location in Washington State

The Washington Territorial Legislature created Douglas County out of a portion of Lincoln County on November 28, 1883.

It is named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois. Stephan A. Douglas was also a famous Illinois lawyer and known for his debates with Abraham Lincoln.

Located in North Central Washington with the Columbia River (Douglas County) forming its western edge, the county is bounded on the east by the Grand Coulee and the Columbia Basin Irrigation District storage lakes. By the 1870's ranching became the county's major industry. The county is known for its wheat farming and orchards, while it also profits from hydroelectric power generated by five Columbia River dams.
