A new town was needed to meet the growing demands for supplies in the large irrigation district of Grant County. The Bureau of Reclamation allowed bidding on some acreage about twelve miles south of Quincy that would be used for the new town site.
Charlie Brown, a pharmacist from Quincy, originally bid on the town site with two other Quincy residents who had since moved away. Charlie Brown went ahead and bought the townsite. The idea to name it George came from a suggestion from a man at the Bureau of Reclamation.
The town was dedicated on July 4th. Part of the celebration included the first one-half ton cherry pie. The first business Charlie Brown and his wife Edith started was Martha's Inn, which is still in operation today.
George is incorporated.
