The Grand Coulee was formed by ancient water flows which also created the monumental Dry Falls along the coulee. The Grand Coulee had remained dry until 1952 when the Columbia Basin Project used the dry river bed as part of the water distribution network to bring irrigation to the Columbia Basin.
State Route 155 runs along the coulee with many interesting stops and viewpoints along the way. A few areas of interest along the Grand Coulee are Dry Falls, the Lake Lenore Caves, Steamboat Rock State Park, and Sun Lakes State Park.
