Sign next to Winthrop auditorium called “The Barn” reads,

Before the Barn

Picture a dance hall where the red barn stands now. Constructed in 1931, it was a focus of Winthrop's community life. Folks gathered there for various town functions, as sports fans could tell you. Basketball players often slipped on the floor kept slick for weekly dances. In 1971, the old hall collapsed under heavy snow.
