In 1897 President Grover Cleveland signed a proclomation that reserved 21 million acres of forest land in the western states. The reserves were renamed to national forests in 1907, a couple of years after the formation of the Forest Service. In 1911, the section of the Chelan National Forest in Okanogan County was changed to the Okanogan National Forest. Today the Wenatchee National Forest and Okanogan National Forest are under one administration.
The forest has over 800 miles of wilderness trails and includes trails for individuals with disabilities. Motorbike, mountain bike, snowmobile, and other recreational vehicles are allowed in designated areas of the forest.
